Books for Children Grants

Funded by:
The Libri Foundation

Description:
The Foundation supports the concept that children who learn to enjoy reading at an early age continue to read throughout their lives. In order to develop a love of reading, children must have access to books that stretch their imaginations, touch their emotions, and expand their horizons. The Foundation works with the library's Friends of the Library or other local organizations because they believe in community involvement and want to encourage and reward local support of libraries. The Friends, or other local sponsors, can contribute from $50 to $350, which the Foundation matches on a 2-to-1 ratio. Thus, a library can receive up to $1,050 worth of new, quality, hardcover children's books through the Foundation's "Books for Children" program.

Grant Name:
Patagonia Environmental Grants

Funded by:
Patagonia

Description:
Grants support small grassroots activist organizations with provocative direct-action agendas, working on multi-pronged campaigns to preserve and protect the environment. Grants can help local groups working to protect local habitat. Individual battles to protect a specific stand of forest, stretch of river, or indigenous wild species are the most effective in raising more complicated issues - particularly those of biodiversity and ecosystem protection - in the public mind. Patagonia looks for innovative groups that produce measurable results, and the company likes to support efforts that force the government to abide by its own - our own - laws. Efforts should be quantifiable -- with specific goals, objectives, and action plans, and should include measures for evaluating success. Because Patagonia is a privately held company, it has the freedom to fund groups off the beaten track, and that's where they believe their small grants are most effective. Most grants are in the range of $3,000 to $8,000.

Education may include the provision of instruments, texts, and office materials, and the support of learning space, practice space, performance space, and instructors/instruction. The Foundation is interested in targeting children 18 years or younger, but will consider projects that benefit college students, teachers, instructors, or adult students. In addition, the Foundation is particularly (though not exclusively) interested in programs that benefit disenfranchised groups, including those with low skill levels, income, or education.

Grant Name:
Redwood Education Grant

Funded by:
Save the Redwoods League

Description:
Firsthand visits to a redwood park, particularly as children during family visits, have traditionally nurtured support for redwood forest conservation. Current trends in changing population demographics within the state and nation, as well as shifting lifestyle and cultural preferences, are decreasing general public exposure to the outdoors, including the redwood forest. Save the Redwoods League believes that if people experience the majesty and ecological complexity of the redwoods, they will be inspired to support the protection of the redwood forest. Those experiences may also nurture a greater conservation ethic in other areas of their lives. Mission: The Education Grants Program was established in 2000 to foster a deeper understanding of redwood forests through personal visits and educational experiences among a broad, diverse audience.

Grant Name:
Mentoring Children of Prisoners

Funded by:
U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services, Administration for Children & Families

Description:
The Administration for Children and Families' (ACF) Administration on Children, Youth and Families' (ACYF) Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) is accepting applications for the Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP) program. This program supports the creation and maintenance of one-on-one mentoring relationships between children of incarcerated parents and caring, supportive adult volunteer mentors. The intent of this program is to support the establishment or expansion and operation of mentoring programs, using a network of public and private community entities, in areas with substantial numbers of children of incarcerated parents. The MCP program is designed to be a community-based mentoring program in which children and youth ages four to 18 are appropriately matched with an adult mentor who has been screened and trained, for a one-on-one (one mentor/one youth), friendship-oriented (non curriculum-based) mentoring relationship. The purpose of the MCP program is to create quality, lasting, one-on-one relationships that provide young people with caring role models for future success. Mentors interact with mentees on a regular and consistent basis to provide support, encouragement, and advice; providing opportunities for mentees to gain new skills and interests and expand their experiences beyond their families, schools, and neighborhoods. Successful mentors do not try to take the role of parent or teacher, but act as a trusted friend, guide, and role model for mentees.

Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grants

Funded by:
National Endowment for the Arts

Description:
The Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grants category offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Age alone (e.g., youth, seniors) does not qualify a group as underserved; at least one of the underserved characteristics noted here also must be present. This category, as an essential component of the Arts Endowment's goal of providing wide access to artistic excellence, supports local projects that can have significant effects within communities. Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development. Partnerships can be valuable to the success of these projects. While not required, applicants are encouraged to consider partnerships among organizations, both in and outside of the arts, as appropriate to their project.

Here's our challenge to students in grades 9 through 12 and their teachers or advisors: Work together to develop a campaign to address the issue of teen driver safety in your community. How you choose to do that is completely up to you. With any service-learning project, the goal is to make an impact in your community in the most creative way possible. The only limit is your imagination. Each year, schools whose campaigns are judged to be among the top 10 in the nation receive $5,000 to help cover expenses to come to The National Service-Learning Conference, where they showcase their great work. One campaign is named the Best of the Best and that team is presented with a $10,000 grant to continue its teen driver safety efforts.
