Grant: Turning Technologies' K-12 Grant Program

Who May Apply: The grant is open to all accredited, public and private K-12 educators within the United States, including charter schools. Educators may be classroom teachers, curriculum area specialists, special education teachers, library/media center/computer lab instructors, or staff development personnel.

Description: The purpose of the K-12 Grant program is to increase awareness and usage of student response systems in K-12 classrooms. The program, which will award up to 15 grants on a competitive basis, provides the opportunity for educators to share and discuss best practices that integrate response technology. Selected applicants will receive a TurningPoint Student Response System. Upon receipt of the system, educators will work with Turning Technologies to share best practices, lesson plans and other materials that will facilitate further discussion and integration of response technology in K-12 classrooms.

Who May Apply: The applicant must be a K-12 certified teacher working at a public, private, or parochial school in the subject of the project.

Application Deadline: September 30, 2008

Description: The purpose of the Kids in Need Grant program is to provide funds for classroom teachers who have innovative, meritorious ideas. A project may qualify for funding if it makes creative use of common teaching aids, approaches the curriculum from an imaginative angle, or ties nontraditional concepts together for the purpose of illustrating commonalities. The project must be an original creation of the teacher or teacher team applying for the grant. Grant amounts range from $100 to $500.

Grant: Toshiba America Foundation Grants Program for K-6 Science & Math Education

Who May Apply: Any K-6 teacher in a U.S. public or private (non-profit) school is eligible.

Application Deadline: October 1, 2008

Description: The goal of Toshiba America Foundation's Grants Program for K-6 Science & Math Education is to contribute to the quality of science and mathematics education by investing in projects designed by classroom teachers to improve science and mathematics education for students. The foundation focuses its grant making on inquiry-based projects designed by individual teachers, and small teams of teachers, for use in their own classrooms. Eligible projects must advance the recipient's science and math teaching in grades K-6 and occur during the school day.

Grant: Pitsco/Hearlihy/FTE Grant

Who May Apply: Applicants must be ITEA members, teachers at the elementary or secondary level who are successfully integrating technology education within their school curriculum, and registered to attend the ITEA Annual Conference.

Application Deadline: December 1, 2008

Description: The Foundation for Technology Education in cooperation with Pitsco/Hearlihy & Company proudly announces the $2,000 Pitsco/Hearlihy/FTE Grant in honor of Tom and Mary Hearlihy. The grant is for a technology teacher at any grade level (K-12). Its purpose is to recognize and encourage the integration of a quality technology education program within the school curriculum. Criteria include: (1) evidence of an effective quality technology education program, (2) documented success in the integration of technology education with other academic subjects, and (3) plans for professional development via the anticipated grant.

Who May Apply: This grant is available to U.S. or Canadian citizens, 25-years-old or younger, who want to further the growth and success of their existing community action project.

Application Deadline: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and stay active for consideration for three months after submission.

Description: Did you recently create a sustainable community action project, program or organization? Do you need $500 to further the growth and success of your program? If you answered, "yes," you are eligible to apply for a Plum Youth Grant. To apply, create a project profile for your existing project or project idea and fill out an online application. That's all there is to it. Plum grants, sponsored by DoDomething.org, are given out weekly.


ONGOING GRANTS

Grant: Pay It Forward Mini-Grants

Who May Apply: Schools, churches and community youth groups (with an adult sponsor) may apply for funding. Groups whose members are all over the age of 18 must include work with youth under the age of 18 as part of their projects.

Application Deadline: Ongoing -- application deadlines are January 15, April 15 and October 15 of each year.

Description: Pay It Forward Mini-Grants of up to $500 are designed to fund one-time-only service-oriented projects identified by youth as activities they would like to perform to benefit their school, neighborhood, or greater community. To be considered in the grant making process, projects must contain a "pay it forward" focus -- that is, they must be based on the concept of one person doing a favor for others, who in turn do favors for others, with the results growing exponentially. Grant applications are reviewed and considered by a selection committee three times a year.

Grant: Advancing Student Achievement Grant

Who May Apply: All schools and groups willing and able to undertake a math mentoring program involving local actuaries are eligible.

Application Deadline: Ongoing

Description: Advancing Student Achievement is a grant program that brings together actuaries and educators in local classroom environments with the belief that interaction with real-world mentors will boost students interest and achievement in math. The Actuarial Foundation can provide a local network of actuaries ready to participate, as well as suggestions on how to integrate math concepts from the workplace into the classroom. Groups applying for grants will be given wide latitude in designing programs that enhance learning and create a “love of math” in each student.

Grant: Learning and Leadership Grants

Who May Apply: K-12 public school teachers and support professionals, as well as faculty at public colleges and universities, are eligible. Preference is given to NEA members.

Application Deadline: Applications are reviewed three times a year; deadlines are September 15, February 1, and June 1.

Description: The NEA Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE) awards learning and leadership grants to individual teachers who want to participate in such professional development experiences as summer institutes or action research; and to groups for such professional development experiences as action research, lesson study, or mentoring. Grant funds, which range from $2,000 to $5,000, “may be used for fees, travel expenses, books, or other materials that enable applicants to learn subject matter, instructional approaches, and skills.”

Grant: Student Achievement Grants

Application Deadline: Applications are reviewed three times a year; deadlines are September 15, February 1, and June 1.

Description: The NEA Foundation provides these $5000 grants to “improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area(s). The proposed work should engage students in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen their knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The also work should improve students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection. Grant funds may be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, software, or scholars-in-residence. In addition, some funds may be used to support the professional development necessary to implement the project. Proposals for work resulting in low-income and minority student success with honors, advanced placement, or other challenging curricula are particularly encouraged.”

Who May Apply: All K-12 public schools in the United States (excluding Puerto Rico) are eligible.

Application Deadline: Grants are reviewed three times a year -- in December, April, and August.

Description: Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper, and National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine are offering grants up to $2,000 (in some cases, grants for up to $20,000 may be awarded) to provide schools with resources to improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. At least 100 schools will receive grants they can use to build a new outdoor classroom or to enhance a current outdoor classroom.

Grant: Grants Program for 7-12 Science & Math Education

Who May Apply: Teacher-designed projects for students in grades 7-12 are eligible for funding.

Application Deadline: Ongoing for grant requests less than $5,000; February 1 and August 1 (twice yearly) for grant requests more than $5,000.

Description: Toshiba America Foundation's grant program for 7-12 science and math education is intended to encourage projects designed to improve teaching and learning in science and math. The Foundation favors classroom projects developed by individual teachers or teams of teachers. Grant Applications can be downloaded from the Foundation's Web site.

Grant: Mr. Holland's Opus

Who May Apply: U.S. schools with an ongoing (for at least three years) instrumental music program that includes regular classes and also offers private and/or group lessons outside of those classes.

Application Deadline: Ongoing. Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation accepts grant applications throughout the year.

Description: The Melody program, one of three grant programs administered by http://www.mhopus.org/award.htm. The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, provides musical instruments and instrument repairs to K-12 school music programs that have no other source of financing for musical instruments and materials. The program does not offer cash grants; grants of instruments or repairs typically range between $500 and $5,000.

Grant: Teaching Tolerance

Application Deadline: Ongoing

Description: The Teaching Tolerance project of the Southern Poverty Law Center offers grants of up to $2,000 to K-12 classroom teachers interested in implementing tolerance and youth activism projects in their schools and communities. According to Tolerance.org, projects that are funded tend to be small-scale and student-focused, tailored to the specified needs and interests of particular learners, economically responsible, and sustainable.

Grant: Airborne Teacher Trust Fund

Who May Apply: Elementary and middle school teachers from private or public schools are eligible.

Application Deadline: Ongoing. Recipients will be selected on a quarterly basis and will be announced monthly.

Description: “As district budgets become tighter, schools are faced with the difficult decision of having to cut important programs, particularly art and music. In response, Airborne, Inc. has developed a Teacher Trust Fund to help school communities across the nation revive these ever-important learning programs.” The Airborne Teacher Trust Fund will donate a total of $250,000 between August 2006 and April 2007. Grants will range from $200 to $10,000.

Application Deadline: Ongoing

Description: The Actuarial Foundation's Advancing Student Achievement program is designed to bring together actuaries and educators in local classroom environments in the belief that interaction with real-world mentors will boost students' interest and achievement in math. To further that effort, the program awards monetary grants of up to $25,000 to U.S. schools and non-profit groups willing to develop a viable mentoring program involving actuaries in the teaching of mathematics to children in private and public schools. The Actuarial Foundation also provides a local network of actuaries ready to participate in the mentoring program, as well as suggestions on how to integrate math concepts from the workplace into the classroom. Groups applying for grants will be given wide latitude in designing programs that enhance learning and create a "love of math" in each student.

Grant: The Mockingbird Foundation

Application Deadline: Ongoing

Description: The Mockingbird Foundation, which "generates charitable proceeds from Phish fandom," offers grants for programs and projects designed to support and improve music education. MFI funding focuses on providing for the basic needs of musical instruction, as well as on projects that foster creative expression. Grants range in size from $50.00 to $5,000.00. Anyone interested in submitting a grant proposal should first send a 1-2 page letter of inquiry.

Grant: Forensics in the Classroom

Who May Apply: U.S. high school science teachers

Application Deadline: Ongoing

Description: Court TV, as part of its education partnership with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, offers several free forensics-based science units for high school students -- and one for middle school students. In order to make the curriculum as useful to teachers as possible, Court TV conducts quarterly surveys about the units. Teachers who complete a survey are eligible for one of Court TV's $1000 grants. The grants, awarded directly to teachers, can be used for "student consumables or resources related to the teaching of the science curriculum."

Grant: IRA and RR Reading Conference Grants

Who May Apply: Early literacy professionals attending International Reading Association or Reading Recovery conferences are eligible to apply.

Application Deadline: Time for review of applications is required in advance of the conference, so educators should apply as early as possible.

Description: Bruce Larkin is the author of more than four hundred early children's books, including the Larkin's Little Readers Series. One of his goals is to encourage and support early literacy efforts. In keeping with that mission, each school year, Larkin awards five $500 grants of up to $200.00 each to help offset expenses for early literacy professionals who attend the International Reading Association or Reading Recovery conference.
